Toyosu Market moves roughly 1,600 tons of seafood every business day, and the tuna auction—the centerpiece of the wholesale floor—accounts for less than an hour of that volume. The auction begins at 05:30 sharp, when buyers circle rows of frozen bluefin laid out under industrial lighting, inspecting tail cuts and making silent bids with hand signals. By 06:30, the floor is clear and the fish are in transit to restaurants across Tokyo. The viewing decks overlook the auction floor from behind floor-to-ceiling glass. Access is free, but the decks hold fewer than 120 people at capacity, and there are no reservations. Visitors who arrive after 05:45 often find the front rows occupied and the aisles standing-room only. The auction itself is not narrated—there are no microphones, no English signage on the floor, and no staff explaining what each gesture means. What you see is a working wholesale transaction, not a curated experience. The market follows a Monday-Tuesday-Thursday-Friday-Saturday schedule, closing every Wednesday and Sunday. National holidays trigger additional closures, and the first week of January and mid-August see extended shutdowns for inventory and maintenance. The official calendar is published three months in advance on the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's market site, and checking it before booking early-morning transport is the only way to avoid arriving on a closed day. The auction's timing has not changed since Toyosu replaced Tsukiji in 2018—it remains the earliest public-access event in Tokyo's tourism calendar, and the one with the least flexibility for latecomers.
